Kampala and Entebbe both make ideal bases for a few days of exploration, being within day-tripping distance of sport fishing on Lake Victoria, bird watching and monkey-viewing in Mpanga Forest and Entebbe Botanical Gardens, the free-roaming chimps of Ngamba Chimp Island, and exhilarating white-water rafting on the roaring cataracts of the Nile close to its source at Jinja.

While the cultural diversity and effortless warmth of the Ugandan people is remarked upon by all who visit the country, most itineraries revolve around the protected areas under the direction of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). These are magnificent, encompassing not only conventional savannah - mesmerizing tracts of African bush teeming with antelope, buffalo, elephant and big cats - but also the snow-capped peaks of Africa's tallest range of mountains, tropical rainforests of mind-boggling biodiversity, and atmospheric lakes and rivers heaving with hippos, crocodiles and birds.

As yet untouched by mass tourism, Uganda's parks and reserves are ideal retreats for the discerning eco-tourist. Uganda is the world's premier primate-viewing destination, home to half of the world's mountain gorillas, large populations of chimpanzees, and a dazzling variety of smaller monkeys. For bird lovers, Uganda is practically peerless: it is one of that very select group of African countries to have recorded more than 1,000 bird species.

When Uganda achieved independence in 1962, it was commonly referred to as the Pearl of Africa, and universally regarded to be the brightest prospect in East Africa. Unfortunately, the two decades that followed were turbulent and disrupting, but since 1986 Uganda has been fulfilling its immense potential. In an atmosphere of democracy and political stability Uganda has during the 1990s, achieved the highest sustained economic growth rate in Africa.

The 1990s have seen major improvements to the tourist infrastructure at every level, ranging from vastly upgraded telecommunications and road systems to the construction of quality lodges in or near all of the major national parks. No less significant has been the development of community-based tourism projects, in many cases initiated or supported by the UWA, to empower and improve the living standard of the local people around the parks and reserves. As a new millennium dawns, the Pearl of Africa has recovered its lustre, to stand not only at the forefront of the African Renaissance, but also as one of the continent's, friendliest and most rewarding tourist destinations.
