Sasaab is a sensational and stylish lodge set in a wild landscape, amongst the culturally proud and fascinating Samburu tribe. It offers an experience of rare and endangered wildlife enhanced by scenic views of the Ewaso Nyiro river- Kenya’s third largest water course.Set on half a mile of hillside, the lodge provides privacy and harmony with the environment and a taste of true African safari. Sasaab’s design is based on strong Moroccan principles, in which African heat is a central consideration. Each of the 9 individual rooms is over 100m² in area allowing for enormous open air bathrooms and huge comfortable beds with magnificent views of the surrounding land. With a high degree of privacy, all rooms have private plunge pools.
Sasaab is located on the Westgate Community Conservancy, which is home to over 600 families. With Sasaab in their area, the Samburu, who are traditional nomadic pastoralists, are benefiting from the visitors who come to the area. In conjunction with this comes an understanding of the value of wildlife, and consequently the value of separating livestock areas from wildlife areas. The lodge has its own vegetable garden where some of the food for guests is grown.
Game Drives on open vehicles where guests will discover a wide variety of wildlife. Samburu is home of the ‘Samburu Special Five’, which includes the Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk and Somali Ostrich. Abundant birdlife and fauna, great game-viewing either by foot, vehicle or on a camel. Elephants frequently come to the opposite bank, whilst looking through the binoculars or the telescope will always reveal something small but interesting.

Guests who want to experience the true wildness of the area can spend one or two nights walking and fly camping in the further reaches of the conservancy. This safari would start with a 4 – 5 hour walk along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, accompanied by camels carrying a picnic breakfast, reaching the fly camp in the late morning. Dinner is served under the stars and the night spent under mosquito tents, giving a clear view of the sky above.
